There’s no denying how popular musicals are. Broadway’s Hamilton has rocked the world, the unique Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is cleaning up this awards season, and Empire is one of the highest rated shows on television. The digital world has certainly kept up as well, and this Wednesday, a new original musical web series (with a LAmb connection!) will premiere online.
Written, produced, and starring our own staff writer Mary Bonney, Break: The Musical follows Kate, a music journalist living in Los Angeles who lands the interview of a lifetime with her rock star idol (played by Broadway alum and America’s Got Talent finalist Brian Justin Crum). When Kate’s gossip-hungry editor (Princess Rap Battle’s Whitney Avalon) puts a spin on her article, Kate’s integrity is put on the line and she is faced with a dilemma that will either make or break her.

Inspired by musical web series like Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, Break: The Musical dives into the backstage world from the eyes of someone who has experienced it firsthand. Bonney explained, “I wrote this musical based off my experience working in the music industry for over a decade and wanted to share everything I’ve seen behind the scenes, good and bad.” At the heart of this world is a relatable message that your passions are worth pursuing, as long as you stay true to yourself.

The five-episode web series is set to premiere this Wednesday, September 21st, and it also features Ian Harding (Pretty Little Liars) and Derek Mears (Friday the 13th). Each episode will contain one original song, composed by Bonney and composer Matt Dahan (How Sweet It Is). The series is directed by Dale Fabrigar with cinematography by Peyton Skelton.
